Business Reporter
The Seattle Times, a family-owned news organization and one of the nation’s premier regional news sources, is looking for an experienced reporter to join our Pulitzer Prize-winning newsroom’s business desk. The successful candidate will embrace general-assignment reporting, following the business news of the day in a community that makes lots of it. If sliding between coverage of the Seattle-area economic drivers, small business and working people appeals, this is the role for you.
Quick-turn, high-impact business stories form the core of this position, but you will not be writing people-on-the-move pieces or rewriting press releases. You will be a key player in our daily coverage online and in print. All our reporters craft enterprise pieces; you’ll do so with accuracy and flair in a well-resourced newsroom that believes in visual journalism and presentation.
The successful candidate will have professional reporting experience. While a passion for business coverage is required, experience covering business is not. This is a hybrid position based in Seattle that requires occasional night and weekend work.
Responsibilities
- Cover breaking business news. When required, post short items to build on throughout the day; contribute to live updates as needed.
- Develop depth on consequential coverage areas, building expertise to support enterprise reporting.
- Be inclusive in coverage, developing a range of sources and story ideas that fairly represent the rich cultural diversity of our region.
- Collaborate with editors and reporters across the newsroom.
- Work with digital producers, photographers and designers to coordinate visuals and online stories.
- Use analytics to inform story selection.
Qualifications
We are committed to diversity and creating an inclusive newsroom, and encourage members of traditionally underrepresented communities to apply. If your profile doesn’t match this job description exactly, you may still be a candidate for this position. Please let us know how your skills and experience relate to the role and its objectives.

Please Note: Please note that this position requires the successful completion of pre-employment assessments including a criminal background check, a drug screen (excluding cannabis), and a motor vehicle report once an offer has been made. This position requires that you have access to reliable transportation to respond to work assignments. Finally, please note that this is a union-represented position.
