The Seattle Times, a family-owned news organization and one of the nation’s few remaining independent daily metro news organizations, is seeking experienced Copy Desk Editors to fill occasional editing shifts at will, on an on-call basis. Starting times for our eight-hour shifts can range from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., and the frequency of work opportunities can range from one shift a month to as many as three in one week as we cover desk editors’ leaves and vacations.
As part of our team, you will ensure newsworthy content moves rapidly from initial draft to final product with accuracy, sense, fairness, grammar and style. You should be comfortable working under tight deadlines with ease while supporting multiple editors at once. Ideally, you have previous experience (and mastery) with both AP style and knowledge of local geography and nomenclature.
Please note: while some training might occur in our newsroom once normal operations resume, this is a remote position. Applicants must be based in either Washington or Oregon.
Not set. Shifts you may be asked to fill include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Every effort will be made to give as much notice as possible for expected and urgent on-call needs.
Copy-editing news, business and features stories for web and print publication, and helping produce digital news alerts and email newsletters.
Writing web headlines with SEO in mind and print headlines that expand on them.
Ensuring that newsroom standards on news judgment and ethics, with specific focus on equity and inclusion, are consistent across Seattle Times platforms.
Working collaboratively with various teams at The Seattle Times on web and print production.
Maintaining a consistently high-quality product with sharp grammar and unfailing accuracy.
Ability to multitask with the demands of remote work -- editing on deadline as well as communicating continuously on Slack and email.

Experience: At least 3 years’ experience working on a copy desk at a major daily metro news organization.
Education: College degree, or equivalent combination of education and/or professional experience.
Strong editing skills, as demonstrated by performance on an editing test
Attention to detail
Ability to work collaboratively under deadline pressure
Familiarity with WordPress is a plus.
