Publications Editor

The Seattle Times, a family-owned, Pulitzer Prize-winning news organization and digital media agency, is seeking an editor for the production of Marketing–produced publications, including weekly, monthly and periodic newspaper sections and other publications.

As Publications Editor, your primary work will include editing content for style and grammar; writing headlines and cutlines; designing sections; laying out pages; and preparing digital files for publication, meeting deadlines and quality standards.

Secondary work will include developing ideas for stories and sections based on company and advertiser business needs and reader interest, working in collaboration with key internal stakeholders. This could include assigning and coordinating the work of freelance writers, photographers and illustrators and may be responsible for writing stories when needed.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Edit content for style and grammar, and write headlines and cutlines, meet deadlines and quality standards.   
  • Design sections, lay out pages and prepare digital files, meet deadlines and quality standards
  • Develop ideas for stories and sections based on business needs and reader interest, working in collaboration with key internal stakeholders  
  • Assign and coordinate work of freelance writers, photographers and illustrators
  • Write stories when needed  
  • Provide backup for other Publications Editors

Schedule:  This is a part-time job, 20 hours per week.

 

Qualifications:

  • Education: Four-year college degree in journalism or related field required
  • Experience: Minimum three years of editing and design at a print publication required; newspaper experience highly preferred.
  • Excellent editing skills with strong knowledge of AP style
  • Exemplary grammar and language skills
  • Self-motivated with strong organization skills
  • Solid page-design knowledge, with InDesign experience highly preferred
  • Strong collaboration skills
  • Ability to balance long-range and short-term planning while working on deadline
  • Ability to develop content, design and an editorial voice to appeal to different ages and target audiences
  • Analyze and make decisions about stories, layouts and photos on deadline
  • Produce error-free, effective sections on deadline
  • Use judgment to ensure publications meet brand and other standards
