The Seattle Times, the Pulitzer Prize-winning newspaper, is actively seeking a Sr. Network Engineer to join our dynamic IT team! The Network Services and Infrastructure team builds the systems and networks that support our web products and is used by employees working in numerous offices located in Washington. Our team is engineering an IT Infrastructure that scales to support over a thousand employees and hundreds of thousands of customers from around the world. Our designs value performance and simplicity. As a team, we actively brainstorm, analyze and discuss creative solutions to hard problems. We are data and QoS driven and intensely focused on metrics in our decision-making processes. We are looking for technologists with both deep and broad expertise as well as a wide degree of creativity and latitude.
This senior technical role will provide engineers and technicians within the company a high standard of peer collaboration, mentorship, guidance and solutions to complex problems. Members of this team participate in a moderate Tier 3 on call support rotation with occasional travel to local offices throughout the Seattle metropolitan area. We are looking for proficient technical engineers, so please expect a thorough technical interview process.
Provide design, development, implementation, and analysis of network/security technical products and systems.
Lead projects that yield highly visible change in Seattle Times Network Services IT environment.
Support existing security and traffic management systems used across the enterprise and perform engineering design evaluations for future improvements to these systems. This includes a broad range of technology and systems including routing, switching, firewalls, load balancing, security protection, monitoring, reporting and numerous other capabilities.
Recommend alterations to the development and design of the current environment to improve quality of products and/or procedures.
Must have the ability to build productive relationships with colleagues at our main office and remote sites around Washington State.
Experience: At least six years of experience in Network Engineering.
Strong experience with Juniper and Cisco routing and switching technologies.
Strong understanding of traffic management and preferably, Checkpoint Appliances is highly desired.
Aerohive 802.11 wireless networking or similar.
Experience designing wide area networks and datacenter installations utilizing L2 and L3.
Broad understanding of switching and routing concepts.
Excellent skills in network analysis fundamentals and troubleshooting as well as communication and documentation.
Experience troubleshooting Microsoft Teams based Telephony issues.
Experience with IDS, IPS, and malware protection appliances / software a plus.
Excellent IP networking fundamentals and extensive experience in the application of IP protocols.
In-depth knowledge of EVPN, EIGRP, and OSPF with experience administering these protocols in small to medium, distributed networks.
In-depth knowledge of and experience with Juniper QFX 10K, QFX 51xx, EX 3400/3300 and Cisco Catalyst 45xx series platforms.
Significant experience/expertise in many of the following protocols and technologies: 802.2/3, 802.1d VLANs/STP, IPv4, TCP (internals & flow control), EIGRP, HSRP/GLBP, TACACS, IPSEC VPNs, Netflow, DNS, DHCP, HTTP, Multicast.
Experience deploying and maintaining wide area networks with emphasis on IPSec VPN and commonly used access technologies such as Metro Ethernet, and fiber optic.
Deep understanding of TCP internals, especially across wide area networks.
Experience in VoIP troubleshooting, implementation and analysis is a plus.
Proficiency with analytic and monitoring tools such as Solarwinds, Qualys, etc. – highly desired.
Familiarity with CheckPoint appliances and GAiA a plus, R77 or R80
JNCIA/CCNA highly desired and JNCIS/JNCIP/CCNP is a plus
Network Security background is a plus.
