The Seattle Times is looking for a Managing Editor to lead an award-winning newsroom with a history of producing groundbreaking journalism for a broad, regional audience. Independently owned by the local Blethen family for more than 120 years, The Times has won 11 Pulitzer Prizes, the most recent in 2020. It is considered a leader among major metropolitan newsrooms, producing rapid-fire breaking news, deep and richly told narrative and explanatory stories, high-impact investigative reporting, and powerful, gripping visual journalism.

As the Managing Editor, you will be responsible for supervising the news staff and for the journalism produced by The Seattle Times and published on all platforms, including the printed newspaper, website, email newsletters and social media channels. As a member of the senior management team of the newsroom and company, you should be comfortable in high-level conversations with regard to management decisions about staffing, funding, content and other strategic areas.
- Run day-to-day operations for a 160-person newsroom producing journalism on multiple platforms in print and online. Report to the Executive Editor regarding matters of news coverage, personnel, finances and strategy.
- Direct daily coverage, big-picture enterprise, multimedia and narrative storytelling and watchdog journalism aimed at a broad regional audience and representing all segments of the community, including those historically overlooked by traditional journalism.
- Manage the staff through a team of five senior leaders and about 30 supervisors.
- Lead daily and weekly meetings and brainstorming sessions to inspire, triage and direct coverage.
- Use digital analytics to inform coverage decisions rooted in a subscription-based business model, and prioritize the continual transformation of The Times from a legacy print newspaper company to a digitally minded, audience-focused media organization.
- Monitor significant stories in progress and advise editors and reporters on ways to elevate the quality of their work.
- Oversee newsroom standards on ethics, style and fairness with attention to the evolution of language around equity and inclusion.
- Recruit and hire to fill vacancies and to expand the staff when the opportunity arises, with a relentless focus on hiring for diversity among the staff.
- Oversee the management of employees in all respects including performance evaluations and regular feedback, working as necessary with the human resources team. Oversee efforts to strengthen retention of existing employees and connect those strategies to a focus on hiring and retaining people of color on the staff.
- Ensure various departments of the newsroom are collaborating openly, sharing ideas and learning from each other.
- Work closely with the business teams of The Seattle Times company, including the audience, product and marketing teams, assuring the newsroom is integrated into efforts to build a sustainable business model through subscription-driven strategies.
- Work in conjunction with a fund-raising staff and other company leaders to support community funding for Seattle Times journalism. This includes attending internal and external meetings, with occasional public-speaking commitments.
- Oversee community-funded journalism “labs,” which focus on intractable societal problems and seek to innovate through solutions journalism, audience engagement, events and other approaches.
- Serve on a companywide strategic leadership team, helping inform policy and business decisions made at the Executive level.
- Participate in journalism industry groups, trainings, etc. as deemed appropriate.

- Experience: At least 10 years of newsroom experience including 5-7 years supervising others, or equivalent journalism experience that demonstrates the skills needed to lead a major regional news organization.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required.
- Must possess strong leadership and management skills overseeing a diverse newsroom.
- Demonstrated ability to apply news judgment and make sound ethical decisions under pressure.
- Ability to triage, coach, listen and mediate. Deep experience editing news stories.
- Technological proficiency, including experience with content publishing systems for web and print publication. Ability to adapt swiftly to new technology and innovations and to lead a newsroom in those efforts.
- Visual literacy: Fluency in photo, graphic and video journalism.
- Ability and willingness to connect regularly with readers and external partners.
- Must be comfortable supervising assistant managing editors and some sub-department heads.
- Reports directly to the Executive Editor.
