Dispatch-Utility Driver
The Seattle Times, a Pulitzer Prize-winning news organization, is looking for a reliable Dispatch-Utility Driver to join our Operations team!
The Dispatch-Utility Driver is responsible for the timely and accurate transportation of completed products to various locations, mail, packages, supplies, and interoffice materials between company locations and regional post offices. This role supports daily operations by coordinating pickups and deliveries, maintaining delivery logs, and ensuring company vehicles are properly maintained. The position requires strong reliability, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate effectively with internal teams and external vendors.
This position requires extended periods of vehicle operation, including driving a box truck approximately 60% of the time and a company courier vehicle approximately 40% of the time.
Responsibilities:
- Pick up and deliver completed products to various locations, mail, packages, and other materials between company locations as needed, including the Seattle office (Denny), Kent Printing Facility (Rotary Offset Press), Kent Warehouse, and Lynnwood office.
- Collect and distribute interoffice mail and materials between locations on a daily basis.
- Pick up mail and verify postage at designated post offices; deliver to additional post office locations as required.
- Retrieve employee paychecks from the Seattle office (Denny) on a biweekly basis and deliver them to the Kent Printing Facility.
- Monitor email throughout the day for additional delivery or pickup requests and complete them in a timely manner.
- Stage the box truck at the loading dock and safely load and unload deliveries using a pallet jack and lift gate as needed.
- Pick up supplies from the post office for both the Seattle office and Kent Printing Facility as needed.
- Maintain a daily log of delivery stops and miles traveled for both the box truck and other company vehicles.
- Ensure company vehicles are properly fueled, cleaned, and maintained; monitor and report any maintenance needs.
- Purchase vehicle-related items as necessary and submit credit card receipts through the appropriate system.
- Other duties as assigned.
Schedule and Delivery Routes:
Regular deliveries may include the following locations and routes:
- Seattle office (Denny)
- Kent Printing Facility (Rotary Offset Press)
- Kent warehouse
- Lynnwood office
- Regional post offices including Tukwila, Tacoma, and Lynnwood-Perrinville, and additional locations as needed
Some routes require early start times:
- Battleground route – once per week (approx. 10:00a.m. scheduled delivery)
- Shilshole/Ballard route – once per month (approx. 9:00a.m. scheduled delivery)
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- A valid Washington State driver’s license (Class D) is required.
- Experience driving a box truck is required.
- Clean driving record for the past three years with no at-fault accidents; ability and willingness to provide a driving abstract.
- Ability to read, write and understand English.
- Ability to communicate effectively with coworkers, supervisors, and external vendors.
- Ability to safely use loading equipment such as pallet jacks and lift gates.
Physical Demands:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.
- Must be able to bend, stoop, crawl, and use hands and arms for the purpose of lifting, stacking, sorting, pushing, and pulling.
- Must be able to lift up to 20lbs frequently, 50lbs occasionally, and up to 100lbs occasionally.
- Must be able to see up close, at a distance, have strong peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
Compensation: The pay range for this position is $21.30 to $25.00 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications.
